Dorothea Lange (May 26, 1895 – October 11, 1965) was an American documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). Lange's photographs humanized the consequences of the Great Depression and influenced the development of documentary photography (from Wikipedia).

A construção do Empire State Building

O Empire State Building foi considerado uma das estruturas mais altas do mundo por mais de quarenta anos, até a construção do World Trade Center, em 1972.

 

A construção do aranha-céu de 102 andares começou em 1930, durante a Grande Depressão, e o prédio é o símbolo da recuperação econômica depois da Crise de 1929, nos Estados Unidos.

 

As fotografias a seguir foram tiradas por Lewis Hine durante a construção, que empregou cerca de 3.400 operários, na maioria imigrantes europeus e índios, e refletem o perigo diário a que se expunham os trabalhadores.

 

No entanto, apenas cinco operários morreram em acidentes durante a obra. Após a conclusão do prédio, Hine publicou um livro com as fotografias intitulado Men at Work. As imagens são propriedade do New York Public Library.

Chita (ou Cheeta), a chimpanzé estrela dos filmes de Tarzan dos anos 30, morreu de insuficiência renal

no dia 24 de dezembrode 2011. Vivia numa reserva para macacos na Flórida (EUA) e tinha 80 anos.
